PROSPECT SUSPENDED
BY Joe Strauss
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
04/10/2009

Major League Baseball announced Thursday the 50-game suspension of minor-league pitcher Deryk Hooker after the former seventh-round draft choice tested positive for a performance enhancing substance.

Hooker, 19, becomes the most prominent Cardinals prospect suspended under MLB's testing policy. His discipline was announced less than a year after several players within its Dominican academy were found to have used banned substances.

Hooker was projected to open the season at Class A Quad Cities, where he was 0-1 with a 1.61 ERA at the end of last season. A San Diego native, Hooker opened last year at Johnson City, where he struck out 55 in 42 2/3 innings and became regarded as a potential fast-riser within the system.

Hooker becomes the eighth Cardinals minor-league player suspended in the last 14 months. Thursday's announcement fell four months after infielder Wilfred Vivas registered a positive test. Vivas played on the organization's Venezuelan Summer League team.

Catcher Juan Castillo was suspended last August, a month after Braulin Beltre, Anders Beras and Yedilson Pena tested positive.

I'm glad to see they aren't slacking off in testing these young players, but you wonder when things will change... or if they'll change.

It doesn't make sense. There is no way they can get away with anything. They are either just plain stupid or taking things they didnt know were banned.
